The wine fest (Winzerfest)

It must be the wine...

Where ever wine is cultivated, there are good parties too! Bensheim shows its hospitality and that it is a visitor magnet on the Bergstrasse with its proud number festivities. Not only those born and bred in Bensheim, the newcomers and numerous guests from far afield enjoy visiting the Wine fest. The largest Wine fest in South Hesse is celebrated in the old town of Bensheim before the work intensive harvesting of the grapes begins. Roughly one hundred thousand visitors come to this fest which first took place in 1929. Around 160 wines from all of the Bergstrasse vineyards are ready to quench the visitors thirst.

The people of Bensheim celebrate the traditional festival every year in the first week of September, they say “we like to celebrate and like people to celebrate with us!“ The market square is transformed into a wine village (Weindorf) and is the centre of many events and cosy get-togethers. There is live music every evening from 8pm in the “Weindorf”, around the market place and in the pedestrian zone. The Wine Fest in Bensheim offers an attractive program with events such as a jazz brunch on both Sundays, a terrific firework and the wine fest procession on the first Sunday with over a hundred splendidly decorated floats, marching bands and folklore groups make there way through the town centre lead by the floral queen and the wine royalty.
