Theatre and Cabaret
Variety, cabaret, concerts, exhibitions, theatre, music or fine arts – Bensheim’s cultural scene is diverse. The Gertrud-Eysoldt Ring is awarded as the highlight of the cultural year. It is the most significant award for theatre acting in German-speaking countries.
The "young performer’s week" is an interesting, nationwide platform, which gives young German performers the oppurtunity to present their acts in public.
The Bensheim Book Festival has established itself beyond the town, with its thrilling crime evenings for the adventurous, entertaining stories for children and lively and fascinating readings for young and old.
At the international summer festival Bensheim-Auerbach, well-known artists from all over the world present a wide variety of chansons and concerts from chamber music to jazz. Not only international guests bring flair to the cultural scenery of Bensheim. A series of “homegrown” talents have also become well known beyond Bensheim.
There are regular guest performances by theatre and music ensembles at the Park theatre and at the Summer Theatre at Auerbach Schloss, cabaret at PiPaPo cellar theatre and you will be enchanted by the Variety Pegasus in the „alten Gerberei” (the old tannery).

Festivals and events
Bensheim shows how hospitable it is with its large number of attractive festivals, where it also becomes a magnet for visitors to the Bergstrasse. Four large trade markets, flea markets and a tradtional Christmas market make a visit to Benshiem always worthwhile.
Below is a small selection of the attractions Bensheim has to offer:
Bensheimer Bürgerfest
Festival in the old town with international flair, always takes place mid-June
The organiser of the Bürgerfest is the Verkehrsverein Bensheim e.V.
Bachgassenfest Bensheim-Auerbach
In the courtyards and rustic wine taverns along the stream, there is a wonderfully cosy atmosphere, always takes place Mid-July
Bergsträßer Winzerfest
The largest wine fest in southern Hesse takes place in the old town with countless possibilites to taste the local wine. There is a daily programm of dance and music in the „Winzerdorf“ (wine village) on the market place, procession, jazz brunch, splendid firework and more, always takes place at the beginning of September for 9 days.
The organiser of the Winzerfest is the Verkehrsverein Bensheim e.V.

Wine tasting / guided tours through the wine cellar
Small but wine (fine!) Various local wineries on the Hessian Bergstrasse offer wine tasting and guided tours of their cellars for groups of more than 15 people. The number and selection of wines will be put together according to your wishes. The wine tasting costs between 1.30 € and 1.50 € per person depending on the amount of, and choice of wines, the sparkling wine tasting costs from 12.00 € per person.
Guided tours of the vineyards – with and without wine tasting
Hear interesting facts about winegrowing in the Hessian Bergstrasse while walking through the vineyards. The short walk can be enhanced with a wine tasting.
Guided tour of the vineyard without wine tasting
Duration approx. 1.5 hours, cost per person 2.00 €, the group price for less than 16 people is 40.00 € (including administrative fees).
Guided tour of the vineyrad with winetasting for groups of 15 and more
Duration approx. 2.5 hours, cost per person 17.00 €. A snack can also be served for a small surcharge.

Wine trail
If you would like to inform yourself about winegrowing, you can do so on the wine trail which leads to the Kirchberghäuschen, a restaurant in the middle of the vineyards. Along the trail are wooden plaques showing the different kind of vines and describing the work of the vintners.

Tour of a brewpub
Visit the brewpub Burggraf-Bräu and learn how beer is brewed. The brewer will explain the production process and the homebrewed beer can of course be sampled.
Take part in a brewery feast, an evening to remember. The Burggraf will lead you through a comedic program all about beer, the art of brewing and of course the consumption of “liquid bread”!

Medieval banquet at Schloss Auerbach
Follow in the footsteps of our forefathers at the Schloss Auerbach with a medieval banquet in a historic, rustic and fancy atmosphere. A herold will escort you through the evening and introduce you to the customs and practices of these former times.
A public medieval banquet takes place every Saturday – it costs from 64.00 € per person for a 6 course meal with herold program, including wine, beer and alchohol free drinks for 2 hours. The evening can be extended by medieval music, archery, axe throwing or jousting.

Burgen and Blütenweg (Castle and flower path)
Get to know the Bergstrasse by following the Burgen or Blütenweg, past the most beautiful places, flowering meadows and castles. Our team at the tourist information office can tell you about our guided hikes following the footsteps of the Nibelung, over the hills and through the valleys of the nature park Bergstrasse-Odenwald. Duration approx. 1-4 hours, Price according to scope and duration.

You will be spoilt for choice. Whether you want to explore the signposted hiking paths, the flower paths, go through the vineyards or discover the delightful scenery on horseback, or if you would prefer the to get on your bike and ride along the excellent network of biking paths, or maybe your favourite sport is golf, in Bensheim you will find plenty of possibilites to plan your freetime and do virtually every kind of sport.
You can find 350km of hiking trails in the Nature park Bergstrasse/Odenwald. Numerous sights border the paths and the exquisite coutryside pleases the eye and the soul. The European long distance hiking trail E8 runs directly through Auerbach. To help you plan your hiking tour, you can use the interactive hiking guide. The search engine contains over 5000km of linked hiking trails in the whole area of the nature reserves "Bergstrasse-Odenwald" and "Neckartal-Odenwald", the Hessian, Rodgau, Kraichgau as well as the urban areas of Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Offenbach and Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen. For those who want even more sport, you can run some laps at the Weiherhaus Stadium or test your fitness at the combined in- and outdoor swimming pool.
