Integration

What do the voluntary integration guides do?

The integration guides have a room at several locations (Town Hall, some schools und nurseries as well as the public housing association) where they have set visiting hours. They offer the possibility to assist immigrants with problems with public institutions and authorities. The integration guides at the town hall have visiting hours on Tuesday and Thursday from 9am - 11am, Darmstädter Str. 52, entrance from the Kirchbergstraße.

The Integration Guides are impartial and treat any issues confidentially. They are obliged to maintain secrecy.

Examples of where integration guides mediate:

Conversations between:

  • Teachers and parents at school
  • Public offices/authorities and customers
  • Preschool teachers and parents in Kindergarten
  • Youth Welfare Office and parents
  • Residents, relatives and carers in old peoples' homes

Accompanying immigrants whren requested to:
Lawyers, doctors, immigration office, job centre, family counselling centres (for translation)

Telephone calls on behalf of and in the presence of customer with:

  • Institutions, authorities, ... (arranging appointments, clarification, which documents are missing, clarification of questions...)
  • Homework supervision (so that the child is accepted and funding applied for),
  • Child-minder register (so that children are taken care of if the parents work and funding is clarified),
  • Health insurance companies (to apply for exemption from additional payment)
  • Nursing care insurance (for application and evaluation),
  • Pension institutions (for mini-jobs).

  • Planning and realisation of events, projects and measures to begin, continuation and further development of integration work in Bensheim in co-operation with partners e.g. migration service, kindergarten...

Integration of people with disabilities

  • Coordination point for people with disabilities
  • Support of the voluntary representatives of people with disabilities
  • Contact person for people with disabilities who are looking for advice
  • Projects in cooperation with representatives of people with disabilities (e.g. creating and updating local guides for people with disabilities...)
  • Formation and cultivation of networks (e.g. support of self help groups)
  • Local information guides and signposts for people with disabilities.

Intercultural opening - Integration at the Town Hall

  • Coordination point for people with migration background
  • Support of the voluntary integration commissioners
  • Contact person for people with a migration background, who are looking for help
  • Coordination point and contact person of the voluntary integration guides
  • Training and further education of the integration guides, regular supervision
  • Initiation of focal points, development of strategies to further the town of Bensheim in the area of integration and to use the available resources together with the integration guides
  • Integration monitoring in cooperation with the integration guides
  • Formation and cultivation of networks between various support institutions e.g. migration guidance group
  • Minute-taking of the migration guidance group and Foreigners' Advisory Council
  • Projects in cooperation with integration guides and the foreigners and/or migration guidance group
  • Planning, organisation, coordination and realisation of intercultural festival projects
  • Public Relations work (Announcement of the integration guides, sourcing new contact points for the guides, maintaining the homepage, updating brochures...)

The town of Bensheim, several companies, clubs and institutions have all decided to sign the charter of diversity and to use these principles as orientation in their organisation.
